When we talk to the business community about the commercial advantages of adopting sustainable practices, discussions frequently focus on the practical steps involved in decarbonising operations.
We find many organisations are eager to explore straightforward options, such as changing fuel mixes, implementing LED lighting, utilising renewable energy, and transitioning to electric vehicle fleets. However, when these options prove challenging or out of their scope, leaders often ask, “What else can we do to reduce carbon in our business without purchasing credits?” This question is particularly relevant for professional services firms, whose carbon footprint may not be as evident as that of manufacturers or retailers.
Fortunately, there are “hidden” decarbonisation solutions that organisations can embrace. These measures not only contribute to reducing CO2 emissions but can also deliver substantial cost savings.
The Epson Heat-Free Technology Printer Range, sold and marketed through their channel partner and EBN commercial partner FUTERA is one such solution.
Decarbonisation: Commercial Advantages and Practical Steps
Last autumn, the EBN was invited by one of our commercial partners FUTERA, to the UK headquarters of Epson UK & Ireland to witness a remarkable demonstration of an office device that can have a significant effect on a business’s CO2 levels: the office printer.
Despite technological advancements, printers remain widespread in businesses, educational institutions, public sector bodies, and charities of all sizes.
The demonstration was so compelling we took a camera crew and made a short video for EBN members:
Sustainability at the Core
“Sustainability is at the heart of our value proposition,” states Dan Wogan, Product Manager – Market Development Business Imaging for EMEAR. In the video, Epson’s commitment to sustainability is clear, and their pioneering Heat-Free Technology print range servs as a testament to this focus.
This range operates without heat. Dan uses a helpful analogy: while other laser printers are comparable to switching an oven on all day just to bake one potato, Epson’s Heat-Free Technology is energy efficient and offers a host of significant benefits for customers.
Key Benefits of Heat-Free Technology
- Energy savings of up to 83% compared to traditional laser printers
- Productivity gains due to fewer consumables required (resulting in less waste) and prints up to 50% faster
- Time savings by eliminating the wait for a laser printer to warm up
- Cost savings that can exceed 70%
- Carbon reduction averaging more than 72% compared to heat-driven laser printers
Overcoming Skepticism and Realising Savings
Surprisingly, the latter two benefits—cost savings and carbon reduction—can prove challenging for Epson’s channel partner FUTERA when presenting to potential customers.
According to Simon Wright, FUTERA’s MSP Sales Director, some prospective customers doubt the magnitude of these savings and are reluctant to switch. This skepticism is understandable, given the prevalence of claims that achieving both cost and CO2 reductions at the same time are exaggerated or impossible. Nevertheless, Simon and his team welcome such objections, as they provide an opportunity to demonstrate the real-world impact.
The Epson Heat-Free Technology printing system is among the most energy-efficient office solutions available. Simon points out that even if a customer is mid-contract with another supplier and faces penalties for switching to Epson, these costs are typically offset within the first year of a new rental agreement, allowing the business to enjoy the subsequent savings throughout the contract period.

As Simon notes in the video, “typically…you are looking at an 82% saving (and)…the savings made will far outweigh the cost of the settlement.”
Any business can benefit from switching to the Epson Heat-Free range. For organisations undergoing an ESOS audit, the energy savings can play a meaningful and cost-effective role in achieving their targets.
What’s more FUTERA are offering a FREE AUDIT to any EBN member business which will prove the financial as well as carbon case. All they need is access to some of your print bills and they will do the rest.
